EOC: Stay home and stay safe

The Polk County Office of Emergency Management is urging residents to shelter in place tonight and tomorrow due to the ongoing brutal cold.

The National Weather Service is forecasting that temperatures will drop to 4 degrees by 6 a.m. tomorrow.  Another round of freezing rain and icing is expected Wednesday.

A quarter inch of ice accumulations is forecast through Thursday.  Temporary rolling power outages will likely continue as temperatures fall and as power grids become taxed.  Shelter in  place and stay safe.

Law enforcement agencies struggled throughout the day Monday to assist motorists who were stranded or involved in crashes resulting from icy conditions.

In neighboring Trinity County, Emergency Management Coordinator Richard Steptoe says one Ä‘eath has been attributed to the extreme cold.
